A synopsis gives a reader an organized account of the story’s main movement. It is different from a sales description: its purpose is to show the central conflict, important turns, and resolution. Follow the requirements of the particular recipient, then focus on the events that make the story coherent.
Identify the central line of action
Begin with the protagonist, the situation that changes their life, and the goal or problem that follows. A synopsis becomes crowded when every subplot receives equal attention. Choose the chain of events necessary to understand the main conflict and the character’s important decisions.
Explain cause and effect
A list of events tells readers what happens, but not why the story holds together. Connect decisions to consequences. When a character learns something, explain how it changes their next action. This gives the summary movement and makes structural problems easier to recognize.
Include the outcome the recipient needs
A synopsis for manuscript assessment commonly includes the ending rather than withholding it like a promotional blurb. Check the recipient’s instructions. The resolution helps them understand whether the narrative delivers on the conflict established at the beginning.
Keep names and secondary details manageable
Introduce supporting characters only when they affect the main story. A role description can sometimes be clearer than another proper name. Worldbuilding terms, locations, and background should earn their space by helping the recipient understand a choice, obstacle, or consequence.
Revise against the actual brief
Length, format, and presentation requirements differ. After drafting, compare the synopsis with the requested guidelines and the manuscript itself. Make sure the summary accurately represents the story you are submitting, not an earlier version of the plot.
Put It Into Practice
Describe the novel in five sentences: the starting situation, the disruption, the main struggle, the decisive turn, and the resolution. Expand that sequence into the required format.
